  • Corsair Rant - Disappointment

OK so after a big whoehaa and reading up etc about how wonderful Corsair is suppose to be, I finally got my stuff.
    Corsair PSU
    Corsair Vengeance RAM (4 modules)
    Corsair Carbide 500R Case
    Corsair H80i Cooler

    Lets start with the case
It looks nice, and things appear to be arranged for easy access. But the back and inside has a very CHEAP plastic feel to it. Was afraid to touch the case otherwise it might crack
Then there's fitting the PSU. Its their own case and PSU but only 3 of the 4 screw holes line up. Even if you mount the PSU upside down, same story. The 4th is on the side and I put a screw in, but its just for show basically.

I managed to fit the H80i cooler at the back of the case OVER the ram with the high heatsinks, which is a plus point. It just just fits. The radiator actually touches the ram heatsinks.

Now the "wonderful" H80i cooler. The manual says that you can download a more detailed version and gives a URL. No downloads in that link! The manual says for best performance the fans should be mounted to suck IN air from the back. Also the manual says to check the arrow on the side of the fan for airflow direction. There's no arrows anywhere on those fans!!! OK fine then just follow the picture as per the manual? But the picture has it that the airflow blows out the case! Can't help to think this is one of those cheap chinese ENG"R"ISH translations for cheap stuff that they somehow get people to pay a premium for.

So which is it? Like most normal systems cold air gets sucked in from the front of the case and hot air gets blown out the back? But for this Corsair system? Suck in cold air from the back and blow hot air out the front? Or suck in cold air from front and back? Which is wrong? The translation of airflow direction or the 3D diagram showing the direction the fans should face?

I haven't actually plugged the power in and switched on to see if anything works yet. Hopefully low temps and quick render times will make me smile again and see why people are so fascinated with Corsair. So far I'm not impressed at all.
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

Awww building Custom rigs is more then buying all parts from 1 vendor... The idea is to get the best parts from different vendors... in any case... as the law states. Cold air stays at the bottom, hot air goes up.

So u up ur corsair radiatior at the top. U suck air from inside, u push it outside. U put 2x 120mm at the bottom, 1 120/240 on side window to put the fresh air in. This should work just fine.

Wow Morne - you've had a bad day!

We find the cases reasonably good and a decent balance between weight and strength. We've built 3 machines using them and all seem pretty good. It is true that cases vary WILDLY in terms of weight and quality. Unless you have a shop to test them all out (we don't) you just have to take a plunge. We got some Fractal Design cases recently that are quite nice.
We have Corsair AX850 PSUs and they fit in solidly. Quite often with PSUs, only 3 of the 4 screws go through a case 'hole' and the other just catches the back of the case. Its a weird setup, and I assume its to take account of tolerances between different cases and different PSUs. It certainly doesn't seem to be unique to Corsair.
The instructions for the H80i are pretty useless and I too found that there are no arrows on the fans, but a quick google search showed up that fans always pull air towards the sticker. I didn't know that before I got the H80i! Handy tip though. I basically ignored the manual of the H80i because I wanted to make sure cool air was being drawn from the front of the case towards the back and out, so my fans are oriented for that setup. I think you can arrange them how you want, but this is the way I wanted it set up.

Hope all gets better for you...
        Kind Regards,
        Richard Birket

Yes I eventually left things at "default" how I've been used to over the years which is suck cold air in from the bottom front and blow out the hot air through the top back. I also saw that thing about the flow and the sticker, but mine has stickers on both sides hehe. I managed to mount rad plus the 2 fans over the ram, (they just just touch)

So far I switched on and upgraded the BIOS to latest and had a quick browse around the BIOS (which seems very fancy nowdays). I got an ASUS PX79. I didnt spend much time on it but apparently this board has an auto OC feature which I'm hoping to try out also

I loaded Win8 and had a quick look around. So far I'm loving Win8, except I havent figured out yet how to minimize windows or close program ))
Over the next 2 or 3 nights I'm hoping to update the software and load all the latest drivers etc and then populate the thing with my apps and transfer software etc. (Had a quick play around with Max 2014 trial and so far loving that also, seriously considering bringing my subscription up to date for this)

So in a nutshell the initial sucky feeling from the corsair stuff is gone now and I'm pretty excited about my new rig. Can't wait for some big jobs to push new rig to its limits (or small jobs even to see how much quicker slow operations will now be)
          hint hint
