Curious how your performance has been with this system after you got it? I'm looking to replace my aging xeon 5650...

It's an absolute monster. Rips through renders. I'm churning through full 5kx5k renders with loads of planting and glossies in under 15 mins in some cases. It's made a massive difference to how I work, actually. I'm now doing full res renders through the day, just because I can. Means I don't have that last minute stress needing to push out the full res finals at the 11th hour.

Great! I'm most certainly going to replace my main system, but I have doubts about the performance of the current servers, only being twice as fast as the 5650 xeon. Twice as fast is nice, but I'd expect in six years to have higher performance then that. And there are 18 core cpus out there, but they cost an arm and a leg

Yeh this is why I went for the 12 core processors. They seemed to represent the best value for money and you avoid all these NUMA issues with windows/max that Peter and others are having to suffer with. I'm more than happy with this new machine, definitely. It's actually quieter than my old 3930k @ 4ghz with an H60 in it as well... there are 2 xeons in this, with 2 H80i coolers... very quiet box. Almost inaudible from 1 foot away.

Pleasure! But I would go for a 4GB graphics card no question. You'll find you need that for heavy max scenes and multiple max instances. I would also take a look into Corsair closed-loop coolers for the processors. Mine are so quiet I can't even hear them. Apart from that it looks excellent to me.

I agree with Alex here. That machine is pretty much exactly what I have and the only "weak" link would be the video card. I would look into a 980 or something similar with a little more onboard RAM. I hope to have a new Titan Z here pretty soon for some testing. Should be interesting to see what it can do compared to our Quadro Cards.

Well the video card and the psu I already have from my old system I had to replace those parts last year so I want to keep them, its another $1,500 I can save. For the coolers I actually have a few H80s in my other systems, I wouldn't say they are totally silent, but they are also old so maybe new ones are better. How did you fit two of them in the case though?

Also what temp is the cpu running at with full load ?

I have a H110 and it's really everything beside quiet.
Very pleased by the performance but it's rumblings like a jet engine.

Its kinda odd, the cooling with liquid but with a fan - I'd rather want to see full 100% liquid solution (but I guess compact one is not possible)

Is that on an i7 or Xeon?

I had a H100 on an i7 and that thing made some serious noise when the processor got warm, I wonder if a Xeon stays cooler and so the fan doesn't spin up so much perhaps?

                              might be a h100 actually.

I've got an H-110. It's really quiet. The bigger fans move more air so they don't have to spin as fast. It also has a bigger radiator so you get more cooling from that. It won't fit in every case so be careful. The fans they come with are kind of junky. Mine were a bit noisy because my radiator is mounted in the top of the case and cheap fans tend to be noisy in that position I guess. something to do with the bearings. I replaced them with a couple of Noctua fans for $40 and it made a huge difference. They also move more air.
