Dimitry, you will find that the 8gb strips of ram will be quicker than the 16gb strips due to the number of cpus/cores.

Haha really? Thanks I did not know that. Too bad I already placed the order I'm sure the difference will be minimal

I'm looking at building a couple of these machines like Dmitry and Alex and I have a question.

Why did you not go with the new M.2 SSD Drives? They are over 2x faster than a traditional Sata SSD and not too much more expensive?

I think I'm going that route with the M.2 drive for the OS. SSD drive for page file / cache and then a RAID array for general storage.

        Any thoughts?

Thanks again to the both of you for documenting your experience with your new machines...I too am/was a little nervous about the total number of cores becoming an issue. Glad to know that you guys are up and running with few issues! Cheers!

ha, you guys saying the corsair H80 is quiet! ive got 2 in my custom build and the noise drives me nuts. having said that i run them on the high setting, and have the stock fans that came with them. and im oc'ed to 4.4.

its possible the h80i and above have quieter fans, and of course the h100/i have 2x the rad area, so half the fan speed needed..

its also possible you guys run yours on low? on low mine are quiet. but then my cpus hit 100+ degrees and thermally throttle down to 1.2ghz

Well these new Xeons are not overclockable, so they're running stock, which means you only need to run the HS fans at their lowest speed, so they're quiet.

In my case it simply wasn't offered as an option by Scan.

Alex, wondering what your cpu overclocks during turbo? in the ark.intel it says that e5-2680v3 goes up to 3.3 in turbo. But mine goes to 2.8 something. At least that's what the hardware monitor says to me during rendering.

i believe the turbo has different levels depending on core use. the 3.3 may be if you are only using 1 or 2 cores, since they will be generating less heat.

Although mine is not a Xeon Im running an M.2 drive for my OS and an SSD for applications which Im changing hopefully tonight as I picked up an Intel 750 Series PCIe drive and going to reload my applications on to that one which should have a dramatic increase in speed as the M.2 did over my old box that was running on SSD. IMHO the M.2 is well worth the investment for a boost in performance.

This is right. If you're using something like the first 6 cores (not sure on that but check Intel's website) then they boost up to something like 3.xghz, but if all 14 cores are in use then they only boost to 2.8 or so.

Sorry I didn't get what you just said,
Do you mean that a M2 is "way" faster than a ssd? I see on the benchmark that both are about 500Mo/s.
Do you see a substantial increase of productivity going from SSD (recent like the samsung EVO 840) to M2?

Would you think you will see any substantial difference between a SSD and a PCIe drive?
I noticed that PCIe drive are way faster, but does that change much in a day to day workflow? having 500Mo/s speed or 1500Mo/s, being so fast already, do you see any difference? Between waiting "1/2 of sec" or "1/4 of a sec" when transferring a 250Mo file...

M2 is a tricky one. you can get Sata M2 drives and PCIE M2 drives. the m2 interface can support devices over Sata, Pcie, USB, displayport.

samsung 850 evo for example is an M2 drive, but still uses Sata, so will have the same speed as a normal Sata drive.

                          this one however :

                          http://www.legitreviews.com/samsung-...-review_162219

                          is a pcie M2 drive.

                          notice the rather chunky speeds.

edit-reading that review, seems there are some rather fiddly requirements for using that drive.

ive got a pair of ssd's in raid 0 for my system drive. 1.1GB/sec does me fine.

Well yes it seems like it's a bit trcky to get that PCIe M2 working.
The speeds are amazing, but I doubt it will make any substantial workflow improvement over a SSD at 500Mo/s.
So I rather go for something easy to install and swap in case there is a issue, I'm a IT fan but when it comes to workstations and reliability and ease of hardware swap, reason is taking the lead

your 2680v3 should go to 2.9ghz turbo on all cores according to the table on page 8 of this doc: http://www.intel.co.uk/content/dam/w...pec-update.pdf

Yeah my 2680V3's go up to 2.9ghz with turboboost.
Initially i was a bit disappointed as I thought all cores would go up to 3.3 but hey...... 48 buckets makes up for it!
