    i thought it will be twice as fast because of the cuda cores.. 1600 for the 970 and 2800 for the 980 ti, so its safe to say once i have my 2nd 980 ti it will 2x faster,

      You can't relate computational performance to the number of CUDA cores only, performance is dependent on alot more variables. I'd advise to check http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html to get an impressions on different performances between GPU's (although even those numbers might not be representative to their performance in Vray.) In case you add a GPU identical to your first GPU it is safe to expect virtually safe the performance though.
