If you have more ram, applications usually take advantage of that. For example I used to run with 24 gb of ram for years and made it work with that. But you are limited to running only few apps at once. Quite often I have multiple maya and max instances as well as mudbox, photoshop and a few comp programs running. Its useful when you don't have to close/open them all the timeDmitry Vinnik

I've been keeping an eye on 2696v3 processors, as I've considered them for my next build.
No way is that Dell machine a $15k beast - those procs are bubbling around the $1200-1500 mark, x 2, add a Supermicro mobo @ $350, budget around $600 for ram, (that gpu is no-use) and of course you could build such a machine (that'd be rock-solid) for less than that $5500......
I'm currently running a 5960x with 64gb and a 256Gb m.2 card for the os and software.
My plan this year is to upgrade both the processor (to a 6960x), the m.2 to 512Gb (I've currently got just circa 12gb left free on my current m.2......) and then take my machine to Windows 10 - all around the June/July period (which I'm hoping the 6960x will have been released and Win 10 is still a free upgrade).
I use one machine and each time I contemplate getting a 2nd machine, I keep referring back to Rebusfarm and how much less headache that all is for me to use.Jez

to avoid initial disappointment, it might be worth trawling the forums for posts relating to running vray on machines with tons of cores. i dont know if its still the case (ive never had to deal with so many cores so didnt pay a lot of attention) but in the past, there were some tweaks needed to get expected performance from vray on machines with 64 cores+
some environment variable that needed setting, or running 2 dr spawners, or something.. dont remember.
iirc it was related to how windows deals with more than 64 cores.

I did ask that question prior to committing to this machine and I was told that, that has been addressed several patches ago.Bobby Parker

Off to a rough start
"During the final diagnosis, we identified that one of the memory slots on the motherboard was not working properly. Although the system works fine in the current configuration with 8 memory modules installed, it will have a problem to install additional 8 pcs. We've called Dell for warranty service. They'll send a on-site technician to replace the motherboard tomorrow. The earliest time we can ship your computer is tomorrow afternoon. I apologize the delay."
At least I'll know it is a new board and they are dealing with it and not me.Bobby Parker

assuming its not a delaying tactic and they actually tested *that* thoroughly (testing with ram configurations other than the one they are supplying) that is actually quite impressive!
id have expected them to fire it up, run pcmark or something, tick the "working" box, and ship it out.
and as you say, means you are getting a brand new motherboard.. again, assuming its all on the level.
