yes you wont find many people using the quad+ boards. they are expensive, and have you seen the price of the quad-capable xeons?

      price/performance is terrible.

what do you expect it might do?

Thanks for the replies, i am thinking about grabbing one of the dual xeon boards for myself and a friend of mine will grab one of the quad setups, he is thinking of spending up to 11k to get all in one machine, don't know how vray would handle this, if he does go through with it i would have access to it as well for rendering

            maybe read this thread?

            http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...w-xeon-v4-cpus

but if you ask me, you dont have to worry about vray, vlado is always 2 steps ahead

            cheers

I see that one of the listed xeons is Intel® Xeon® Processor E7-8870 its got 10 cores and it costs $4600, if you put 4 of them in a box that's going to be $18400 for 40 cores (80 HT threads). Not considering ram and board it self, you are looking at a $20k system.

With the new e5-2699 v4 with 22 cores and 44 threads you can get more cores for less money imho if you can find those cpus at a similar cost. They are also faster (being newer).

yes, its something we actually talked about today, getting just a dual board and a processor with more cores, there are a few possibilities actually, when it comes to setup and price to pay so i think a dual board is a smart choice however maybe its better to grab a quad cpu board and add processors as finances allow, that way no need for a new board or whole new setup later, just our thought on it, i think it will in the end pay for itself in a few months anyway, its for the office, the quad board so might be worth it

forgot to say as for myself and pocket a dual board is ok and a used or two,10 core or higher cpu(s), am trying to get it as low as possible and so far i see a few that i like for great prices online, i think even the cheap ones for a few hundred a worth a shot, if it lasts a year i will most grateful until i can afford something that's brand new. on tom's hardware i was setup with a guy who has bought a few from ebay and he advised me of the seller, he has been using the 8 core cpus in a dual board setup for over two years and he says it was worth it so am gonna try my luck until i can afford it or maybe i will write to the Ellen show, hahaha, my wife watches it everyyyyyydayyyyy

Yeah without a doubt. If you have enough work to keep you busy all the time, then a fast machine is easily justifiable. And in the case of rendering, the more cores you have the better. I've bought a E5-2680v3 dual 12 core (48 ht threads) its about three times faster then dual xeon x5650 (which is what my farm is) and that cpu was very favorable 5-7 years ago. The new e5-2696 and 2699 v4 are going to be double if not more of mine, but they are also very very expensive
