  • Sharing a render node over the internet

    Hi all,

We are currently looking at options for upgrading our hardware, specifically render nodes. Various members of our team work in a different location to the main office and as a result have their own local render nodes. We were wondering how we would go about setting up a small render farm in just one location that they could access and submit render jobs too via the internet using 3ds Max and V-Ray. Same as how Rebus Farm works I guess. Has anyone done this or looked in to this at all? We have no idea how to set this up at the moment so looking for guidance.

    Thanks, and happy new year!

    Hi James
That's quite easy to do with setting up VPN. After setting it up you will have access to your nodes like they are in a local network. Also, I recommend using deadline as main software for handling rendering processes - it is adjustable and easy to set up. I have this kind of setup for big projects, but I am rendering on Amazon EC2 - though there is no difference in that, set up procedure is the same.
    Available for remote work.

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated. Just out of curiosity, whilst Deadline is considered better, would Autodesk Backburner still work just the same? Reason I ask is during setup/testing, it would be great to keep the costs at a minimum and utilise what we already have.

OK, got as far as installing LogMeIn Hamachi but unsure what steps to take in order to get this set up? Would someone mind explaining in baby steps the exact process as I am not familiar with using VPN at all. Thanks!

I´m using hamachi to connect to my remote renderfarm.
When I send the job thru backburner, the render starts but distributed rendering doesn´t work at all. The dongle is located at my office, not with the render nodes.
anyone from support than can help? thanks!

Also deadline is free for two nodes so you could try that with no cost - from https://deadline.thinkboxsoftware.com/getting-started :

Deadline for 2 nodes or less

Deadline can be used on up to 2 render nodes without requiring a license. If you are only using Deadline on 1 or 2 render nodes, you can skip ahead to the next step.
