I emailed him recently and said we'd happily make quite a sizeable contribution. Sounded like he hasn't totally ruled out bringing it back to life.

Personally, I got burnt a few years back, with a plugin, and I stopped buying plugins, except for the reputable ones.
I meant why would he give the source code to the community that pissed him off? Mistakes happen of course ..no one is perfect. i am just saying i understand that guy thats all...no offence of course

Then, he doesn't care about the community, which makes more sense. One thing I always remind myself is, it is about my clients and not about me. I try to put my client's interest over mine, which helps me stay sane and not go Rambo on them.

I think it's interesting how the 'cg community' can be seen as a single entitiy sometimes. it's full of hundreds of individuals from all economic backgrounds, children to older people and corporations and independant studios. I find these days talk about 'the community' a little odd. this website has one, but there everyone who uses max isnt in the same one.

Anyway we switched over to growfx for our ivy needs. It's a little more involved but has an extra level of control.
Here's a quick demo of someone using it. mute the video -

Selling stuff and donating things are different; 1) If you want this, this is the price as marked. 2) If you'd like this, here, take it and give what you can. You can only give 0.01 cent ? Here, have it for free. I hope things improve for you....

If this was all about respect, then he is showing none to the people who *have* paid him.

And if he is no longer updating his software, it'd be respectful to inform his *paying* audience that have 'donated'.

(like many of us, I'm constantly amazed at the free generosity of others on ScriptSpot).
Because you donate some money, it doesn't mean he owe you something.
That's also why some dev doesn't go commercial.
Because as soon as you "charge" them, now you have a responsibility to support the product and users expect a lot more(sometime unrealistically more).
I have made some free tools. I never charge or even accept donation because of this.

I think I remember it was his thesis, wasn't it? There isn't anything else like it, so there are some responsibilities there. I mean, morally, not legally. I am not implying he is an immoral person, but his plugin is used by thousands and now it is broke for people who move past MAX 2018. Again, if you don't want to do the work yourself, you can sell it or open it to other developers. The only other scenario I can think of is he are sticking it to the community.

It was thomas luft's thesis - the max version was a conversion of the code by this guruware guy.
The standalone version is still available.
growfx implemented similar but more advanced ivy tools in the same year, 2008.

So.. If I gave something for free for people, now I have moral responsibility?
No wonder why more and more people stop giving out all together.

Cutting ties out of anger, yes. If he said I am too busy to keep this script updated, I am sorry, then no. However, if he said someone gave me a penny tip, so screw you all, yes. If GrowFX can do it then I'll go down that route.

                          Interesting logic I must say.
In the end, it is us who is losing with this.

When I mentioned about a bunch of us getting together and paying, I was not and are not referring to the source code, I was referring to paying for an update for a select few of us that like and use the plugin and are willing to pay him for his time to do that.

If he wants nothing to do with it any longer then no worries, that's his right...

Don't put everyone in the world in the same boat, not everyone donated $0.01.

There is no need for this to get heated, were mostly all adults and professionals here (I hope)

Personally Ill probably forget about this plugin going forward and look for alternatives to add to my digital toolbox.
                              Cheers,
                              -dave

I don't see anyone getting angry, at least that's not how I am reading things. I agree, if he doesn't feel any responsibility to the community then we need to move on and find an alternative.
