I don't have a clue but how much effort does it take to update a script for a new MAX update? Hours? Nothing is done for nothing. He could have drove web traffic to his personal webpage, sold ads.... there has to be more to it.

This is C++ plugin. Not a script.
I have done things for nothing.
      Not everything is about money.

Are you sure ‘he’ thought and cared what his paying customers ‘deserved’ ?

Anyway this is all excuses. I think he didn’t want to update anything, including his outdated website. Just the few people I know who paid at the time *when he complained* ran into a couple hundred bucks.

I guess this thread has managed to illustrate the 7 stages of using a free plugin and serves as a pretty clear cut example of how we ended up where we are.

Agreed, however, I don't get sticking it to the community. Sell or give the code to someone who could keep it updated. If he dislikes us so much, good luck working in the industry of people you don't like.

Then, let's say he did to help others.
But, that doesn't mean he need to "Sell or give the code to someone who could keep it updated."
You are not entitled to anything.
                It was his courtesy.

                  You donated.
That does not mean you are entitled to something.
This is exactly why I don't even accept donation when I release something.
What does updating website to do with this.
You don't complain about place when you get free lunch.

He was quoted saying he didn't make enough money to cover the web domain. It is his prerogative to do what he wants with something he created. We can thank him for what he provided for the time he provided it, I guess.

That's the funny thing about human psychology... people sometimes do complain more when they get things for free. Add in donations, where those who give money don't feel like they bought something but actually like they actually did the creator a favour and you're in a whole new world of entitlement.

nobody owes you shit and it still works if you keep an old copy of max around. software companies can go out of business, autodesk can scupper your software, people can just decide they dont want to do something anymore. you have to adapt and work around it, you cannot expect the lives of others to always be in alignment with what you want from them.

Yes, taken out co context this holds true, however, he got mad about not getting money for something he was giving away. It is more of a case, you hurt me I'll hurt you 10X as much, which tells you something about where someone's heart is at; a little callus.

What are you talking about free lunches ?

Are you saying I didn't pay for it ?

By your logic it seems as though the best thing would have been to not give this guy anything (as it's free right ?) and then he'd have had nothing to complain about. (can't believe he'd be any happier with that somehow).

Anyway, I've never complained about whether he wants or doesn't want to maintain his software - you yourself mentioned earlier it was all about 'respect'......

Some strange arguments coming from this thread - are you sure you're not him ! (I see you've defended him with equal vigour on other websites as well.....).

If you are 'him', thank you for your service to the community, now, give up the code!

Having said that, pulling the plug on something that was downloaded 35000 times, is pulling the rug out from under people. The problem will be, people won't know until they need it, just to find out that the developer got mad, picked up his blocks and went home.

                              LOL !!

If it's had that many (35,000) downloads, seize the opportunity, from now on, make it $10 minimum and start making some money from this thing - or at least cover your 'hosting' (cos we all know how expensive that is....) and donate the rest to charity (if it's not about the money).......

YES, it could have been better if no one donated at all.
If was the 0.01 euro donations which caused problems.

                                Why I'm defending him?
Because I know him personally and was trying to bring mores to the community.
After I have read all these comment from various places, I started to rethink what I should do.
