  • Asphalt Roof Edge

    I am dying with asphalt roof edges. Does anyone have any tips? I have some luck with drawing a line and center offsetting it. Then I grab the edges and drop it down, eyeing things, but unless it is a straight roof edge, it never really works right. I have tried the same line center offset and shape merging, but MAX is really bad at it and most of the time it fails and only cuts part of my roof. A roof with dozens of edges can take hours. I know there is a way because the roof displacement script did it in seconds, but that script has gone dead a decade ago.

      I think this might help you;

      The default is not asphalt, but you can make it custom.
      Haven't used it in a while, but from what I remember, it was working fine for edges.

        Yeah, I have tried this and almost everything else. For other types, this script work great. Even Railclone doesn't have a simple asphalt roof with ridge cap which is odd to me. In the states, 95% of your roofs will be asphalt shingles.

                Now, mind you, simple roofs are quick, but when you get into roofs like above it becomes a nightmare. I just did a roof with 9 ridges, all with the same pitch and it took me a few minutes. It's the above-complicated roofs that can take many hours.

                  railClone seems to be an obvious choice here.

                    I reached out to them and asked why they don't have a simple asphalt roof. They said that they can't create a roof type of every roof style, but I said that 95% of the roofs in the states are asphalt. That was months ago and I haven't heard back. I don't know RailClone well enough to build my own style. Simple roofs yes, but roofs where the pitch is different on each side of the roof isn't so easy.

                        Yes, but those are simple ridge caps. If you have hip caps with each side being a different pitch, it is a pain.

                          would displacement work for you or it needs to be geo?

                            I do use displacement for my roofs.
