  • SketchUp Madness

I am going to travel the globe smacking SketchUp out of un qualified hands. What the hell! Any recommended scripts to try to automate the cleanup? Flipped normals and double faces everywhere I look.

im feeling ya, I end up basically remodelling the whole thing, just using it as scale reference.

That's what I am having to do. It's a huge site, so it's madness. I mean, everything is wrong with this model and they couldn't have done worse if the tried.

I quoted a couple of times based on the fact they had a sketchup model...from the architects themselves. I very wrongly assumed they would know what they were doing.
I was so wrong and it was an awful, awful mess. I felt honour-bound to stick to my quote and so put up with the nonsense.
Needless to say, never again. Only useful as a template imo.

I questioned this architect and he said that his guys are the best in the business. I told him that I'll quote based on a flattened set of documents; he wanted a discount, which I didn't give to him.

...the best in what business though? That's the question. Maybe they're actually bakers and their cakes are awesome!?

Put it this way, if their cakes taste as bad as their SketchUp model is built we are in trouble and there will be some lawsuits.

I only quote based on the SketchUp I receive and explain to them why it isn't usable in case of these kind of things. Only 10% of the models I receive are somewhat usable. If I'm lucky they draw with components and it's easy to add adjustements/detail or replace the whole thing. SketchUp is a wonderful tool to model with (if not too organic). But it can be completely miss used, unfortunately that's almost always the case.

I have found joining everything in MAX and editing poly using the material ID is easiest. If I join everything and pick the id for, let's say grass and detach it, works well.

Lucky you! LOL in one of those I got stuffed on, the model I got had, for instance, parts of the brickwork connected to completely different other parts of the geometry which had a different material or even multi-mat, all of which were duplicated and uniquely named.
This was true of the entire model and it is bewildering to me that someone managed to screw it up to such a degree. It was impossible to pull apart and so I pretty much had to scrap the lot.
                      As I said, lesson learned

When I ran my material to layer script, every element had a unique material, even though the materials were the same. For instance, the same brick, but every element with brick and had different brick material. After I cleaned everything up I had to delete a couple of thousand layers.

It's a little bizarre that there is simply software existing that serves to partially mitigate others' errors

Yes, and I am on MAX 2020. I just imported a site plan and each poly is an element and the normals are arbitrarily flipped all over the place.
