  • Modelling mountains, specific geo location

I need to somehow generate a desert mountain landscape from a specific location.

I've exstensivley researched a number of options. Nasa height maps, the works. I can't seem to get anything with enough detail to start working with in substance painter/designer.

I'm limited by the site, in that it needs to be fairly accurate so i cant just run something through world creator or Houdini.

Any thoughts on how you would approach this?

Attached an example site location and also the level of detail we need to acheive.

I should add I do have a simple abre bones topo model along with site photography

I think you're going to be limited by what lidar data is available if going that route. Everyone's in the same situation. Otherwise get the best you can in a rough way and further refine it in whichever terrain gen app you can access.
I recently looked into this quite a bit, using World Machine, Gaea and World Creator. I settled on World Machine as it had all the tools to do this as far as I can see.
Whatever result you get from a terrain generator you'll have to to drastically optimise to get it into Substance in any case, as it's limited afaik, so compromises and texture hacks will likely need to be used.

Or maybe someone else has a better tested workflow that'd suit

If you can get access to the site then take some photos from a drone and use a photogrammetry software.

        Nice.

We have tons of high resolution drone footage, each clip starts from different angles around the site. Would something like this suffice? We haven't had a site like this before and photogrammetry software would be new for us. Any specific softwares you'd recommend? Also, any guides/best practice tutorials you'd be willing to share?

        Cheers

We have photos with geo locations but not enough to generate a decent model.

Does anyone know a way of extracting frames from drone footage, that includes geo location data?

It doesnt matter! Just takes longer to create the model.

Getting some pretty impressive models out. sirio76 Thanks for the heads up

Is your location in the US? There’s a higher definition Lidar 1 meter available for download, they are really good. There’s a post I made a while ago, it would be nice if other countries could make this available. https://forums.chaos.com/forum/chaos...onument-valley

if you have the photos extracted from the drone survey you could simply process them thru Reality Capture and generated the mesh with the high res textures, it’s a very common practice in the studios and there are some great YouTube videos on the workflow for beginners.

There are a bunch of good ones, I did this one with the files provided a few weeks ago.

It's not in the US no.

I've spent quite of bit of time looking into photogrammetry and I've managed to get some great looking results from the dron photography, amazing stuff. I used an open source program called COLMAP.

I'll check out what COLMAP can do, thanks for the tip Dan.
