it's just a null thingy majig so that programs can pretend they are using tc/ip over a network , or something like that

yeah its like a 1 computer LAN all contained within your computer and all software based.

Some programs that have both the client and the server installed on the same machine need to have the loopback adapter installed so that they can see each other.
(that was the only way i could get the inital aura builds to work) see my sticky in the aura forums.

but for the most part its generally not needed.

that would be all nice. but it wasnt there at the beginning of this week and besides opera i have not loaded on anything in a few months

Mmm odd, well it certainly wasnt opera that put it on there.
And to test that i just install the latest Opera and no loopback adapter on my machine.

So some how it got there another way. Or was there beforehand.
