A very interesting waste of time is comparing the Maya and Max forums.
Both sides fear to loose. Many Maya Users distrust autodesk. Funnly they really painic about the OSX version, which is nonsense.
Nearly nobody realised that there where 2 more companys interested in Alias: Avid and Apple.
With Apple the futur of Maya would have been very bad, we know that this companys don't cares about other OS, they proved it many times.
With Avid we would have another giant on the market. Either they would have stoped the one or the other product. But, it would have been hard for on side.
Indeed the one that lost most are the 3dsmax Users. It's almost clear that autodesk will now sell out 3dsmax as game and architecture software. While the more successfull Maya get's there highend product. It was also clear, as autodesk didn't invested much in Max and the subscription was a sure money cow to buy Alias. Better buy it then make it yourself.
In my opinion there will be 1-2 years showing both products with a bridge etc. I think they already working on it, as they announced a job for writing an export plugin for 3dsmax to the next generation software. Indeed now we know what the next generation is.
For Maya the deal is almost perfect. They will get rpf support, a great expirence in User friendly interface and hopefully become more open to plugins. The best will be the new Maya Users coming from 3dsmax Users that will get Maya soon much cheaper.
If that all turns out that way, I don't know. I just guess, but I also know the market since 15 years.

well a: there are existing copies of maya that chaos is making a plugin for. and i assume alot of production houses would continue using those packages if autodesk discontinues maya (not debating if thats what they will do) so i dont really see this affecting chaos's plan
and b: well. i dont really have a b. thought i would but i dont.
