Combustion encoders

Does anybody know how to add more encoders to Combustion? I would like to be able to add Windows Media 9, DivX, etc. but I haven't been able figure that out. I would be kind of upset if they expect you to buy the $600 Cleaner XL for that kind of capability.

Yeah, thats what I thought...I installed the WM9 encoder - twice, and still nothing. I haven't tried a DivX encoder yet.

Ok, the DivX works, so it must be something with wm9. Unfortunately, wm9 is the one I really need so because most people do not have divx.

Hmm, it works on our boxes here and on my box at home, did you scroll all the way down it's usually one of the last ones, oh and it's an avi not a wmv, just uses the wm9 codec.

Man, I must be doing something wrong, because I've tried installing wm9 encoder on 2 computers and still can't get it to show up in combustion. Is there a certain folder that the wm9 files should be copied into or what?

As far as DivX, I got the encoder to show up, but it only made a 64k movie and would not play in the DivX player. So thats screwed up too!

Eric, what menu do you go to to see the wm9 encoding option in combustion? Under Render, I go to Video for Windows, and then to Options to choose the codec.

Oh I see, it is a separate install from the encoder, you need the Windows Media Video 9 VCM Codec. Then it will show up under the codec options.

I cannot for the life of me get that to work. I downloaded pretty much everything there is to download, played a file that was encoded with series 9, and still nothing. I don't know what the problem is. Eric, you're on Combustion 4?

Yes, I'm using combustion 4, that link I gave you defaults to the Main windows media downloads, sorry didn't notice that.

windows media uses direct show codecs
divx and others are video for windows (vfw) codecs
if only vfw codecs show up in combustion it could be that combustion is vfw only (virtual dub used to be vfw only, too and some codecs didnt show up there for the same reason)

an alternative would be to use the windows media encoder that comes with windows media 9 (its a standalone tool) on uncompressed avi files
the tools also gives you much more control over your compression results

there also are lossless compression codecs for use with vfw applications that have compression ratios of about 1:2
might allow you to save a little space before doing final compression with windows media

Keep in mind that the the DivX compression you do in Cleaner does NOT entitle you to distribute DivX endoded files commercially: you still need to buy a license for that use (NOT the DivX or DivX Pro encoder/program but a real commercial use license; just read the DivX EULA in one of your Cleaner folders or see the DivX website). So you better use WMV !!!
