seems to be a mix of updating the bios, adjusting some settings inside and ignoring the fact that the windows task manager tells you only 3gig are availlable
in the thread i linked to some ppl suggested that it has to do with the "only 3GB per process" limit of windows
seems some system tools (cpuz) show the whole amount of ram
just in case you want to try (nice tool anyway, especially for checking the current and possible ram timings):

Thanks again for help and moral support

Maybe you are right DaForce, that I should better try and fix the problem myself. But I just dislike bad aftersales. If that is how they deal with people, then I am going to give them some bad advertising all over the place.

Their slogan: save time and money. I guess they mean their time and money by that.

my dual zeon does the same. its a memory chipset limitation on the board. 845 northbridge i htink. so although the the board takes 4gb, it only can use 3.2 or there abouts. it does on my board anywho. its the asus dual xeon, not the pc dl version tho, the other one....
        maybe its that?

Well, I decided to give it a shot. It looks like Mike's link has helped out. Thanks Mike.
I am finally seeing all the ram.

          Still got another problem though.

I am running 3dsmax 7(on winxp 64), after it starts up it takes quite some time before the viewport becomes accessible, does anyone else have this? It does the same thing whether I use software, opengl or direct3d...

Yet another thing, is it neccessary to use the 3gb switch on winxp64 as well? Looks like when 3dsmax hits 3gb of memory usage, it crashes. Or is that just the max. amount of memory per process possible?

max also is slow to "release" the viewports once it loads up for me as well. I find after you have opened it once it tends to be quicker the follow tries.

XP64 can use up to 4gb for 32bit applications, so no you dont need the 3gb switch (like jacksc02 said)

GOod to hear ur ram finally got its ass into gear
Let komplet know what you had to do to get it work and tell them thats something they should have done as they only sold you a partially finished machine. Give them some grief

I have the same problem with slow load times on all my amd x2's as well. Running 64bit on three and XP on one, same problem on all. I also have a dual zeon 2.8 that does not have the problem.

I emailed amd and they said they were aware of the problem and were working on it. Whatever that means.

Hopefully we'll get a patch in the near future.

Thanks, good to hear that it is not related to my system in particular.

Daforce, that's exactly what I did. Fortunately, I asked the guy who did not help me his name and the name of his manager. I wrote his manager and this guy offered apologies and offered to send the system back to fix the mem problem or guide me through it. It's that simple.

Mind you that the guy who I called at first said to me I needed to update my computer knowledge, well I've just advised him through his manager to update his knowledge in customer care.

So if max crashes above 3GB, then there is still something wong I guess. On the other hand, I found that XP 64 needs another switch like /LARGEADDRESSAWARE for 32 bits processes see this page:
