The foucaulters can try to explain everything in a massive convulted mess that makes very little sense for the sake of seeing just how high that horse will go, and the fruedians can analize everyones settings and accuse them of wanting to sleep with their mum, dad, sister and dog, not neccesarilly in that order.

"Religion" has also done a lot of good in the world.

Almost all the hospitals and universities in the Western world were started by religious people. Mass communications, printing was started by people who wished to see a broader distribution on the Bible. Most scholarly endeavors have their roots in religion. The vast majority of all personal charity comes from religious people.

Socialism/Capitalism/Communism have also caused a lot of hostility in the world - yet I rarely see posts calling for the banishement of their discussion.

"Religion" is not the cause of "hostility" in the world. The evil in the heart of man is the cause of hostility in the world. Man can turn anything - even good things - to evil.

If people remain mature and respectful, there is no reason why religion should not be discussed in the Off Topic forum.

If we allow societal pressures, or anti-religious bias to force religion into the "Taboo Subject" box, then we are allowing a significant erosion of our basic freedom of speech. Freedoms lost are seldom regained.

It won't stop there. What will the next subject to become taboo?

I'm not talking about what it's done in the past, i'm talking about peoples attitudes to it. Yes, there is a good chance we can have a reasonable discussion about it, moreso on this forum than most others too. But if youve been raised religious, a conversation with a skeptic set in his ways will achieve nothing.


You didnt need to be so defensive, but that will have a lot to do with me being so vague.

I wasnt saying its a taboo subject by the way, just that it has its time and place - in a sig, which goes after every post, kinda feels like preaching. They dont need to tell us every time they say something, and a proper discussion will always have its place.

As an aside, seeing as I may aswell join the discussion now - one of the major gripes I have with religion is that some of the worst people ive ever met tend to be the most religious ones, ignoring the underlying message ("Dont be a shit, and it'll all work out in the end") as an excuse to be more evil, smug in knowing that theyre better than everyone else.
I'm not saying ive seen it here, but I think in todays society, far too many people have completley forgotton what the point of religion was in the first place and use it as an excuse to settle their mind about their flaws. I dont belive you need to follow anything or attach yourself to something to be an inherantly 'good' person, and at the end of the day, isnt that all that matters?

Funny....I agree mostly with this. I also see alot of people who dont want any form of religion anywhere near them because it reflects there immoral
actions. I also find it very funny that the simple mention of religion in an
avitar can upset so many people. But, if someone had "athiest" in there
avatar, just as many people would be upset on the other side. Have we
such thin skin these days ? There are way to many people, on ALL sides
of every debate that are eager to be offended.
