just got the demo and am testing it with my tractor animation. WOW
before there was no way i could play the animation is the viewport...way too sluggish. now it play plays perfectly smooth. pan/zooming is just as incredible too. i can see this improvement alone saving tons of time. you shouldn't have to use the preview animation again.

Is it me or is this only 32bit as said? .... a little odd, nothing in the readme? ... did you guys read the readme? ... quite an eye opener, i expect a service pack is already to launch !

          Performance

          Animation
          • During animation playback, caching the scene may delay the playback by a few seconds.
          • The Maxine.max scene file may display a slower performance on 3ds Max 9 64-bit than in the 32-bit version of the program.

          mental ray
          • Some mental ray effects may be slower when compared to 3ds Max 8.

          Radiosity
          • Radiosity may be slower in 3ds Max 9 64-bit than in the 32-bit version.

          Maps
          • The Gradient plugin (gradient.dlt) may cause performance degradation in viewport manipulations in the 64-bit version of 3ds Max 9.

          File I/O
          • Loading files with DirectX shaders on them may display a red wireframe while the shader is being compiled. This can slow down the File Load process.

          Rendering

          NURBS and Displacement
          • Rendering nurbs surfaces in the scanline renderer with nurbs-based displacement causes system instability. Adding a Displacement Approx. modifier or a Displace Mesh WSM to the nurbs surface will allow for scanline displacement rendering of the nurbs surface.
          • The Split option in Command Line rendering only works with Network Rendering.
and that was just a little bit of the dont in this doc.

This has to be one of my biggest gripes at the moment(gradient and ramp). Why are gradients so damn slow in viewports? It can't be too difficult to have a lower level of precision in viewport than you get at rendertime to speed up interactivity.

Perhaps a vray-gradient material would be a worthy addition to the wishlist

so this is the old "wait till service pack 1 before installing" drama?

well none of those look deal breaking to me. We are currently working on a project so massive that its hitting the memory wall before even throwing in lights. And it needs to be a dusk/nightime sexy looking scene. I need 64bit now dammit! lol

As with any new release, you should throughly evaluate it to be sure your immediate needs are met before diving in headlong. But I know that when the loudest people talking about R8 where shouting to wiat, I didn't and had no major problems with what I needed it for. And to be honest, 'slower in 64 bit than 32 bit' sure doesn't sound like a major problem to me. But I am sure there are many yet to be found issues.

They got some troubles with x64. Sadly. But, think it won't made Dreamscape blame 'em for this....
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

From what I understand you're not going to get a speed-performance increase with 64-bit software, just the amount of available memory. Which may increase performance in some areas (since you won't have to swap-disk everything), but there's also the overhead of addressing 64 bits of memory.

i just hope the viewport performance is as good as in the videos on the autodesk site....
