During production we undertook a shorter day and half shoot at Pinewood Studios to capture exploding paint elements. These were then combined with the live action and CG to enhance the plumes of colour visible in the shots.
To achieve truly believable liquid that would be indistinguishable from real paint at this scale, the team used Scanline AG’s ‘Flowline’ fluid simulation software.
I dont know about you guys, but what i like the most is the rainlike sound paint makes touching the ground. Superb !

I thought the best bit was the end shot of the paint-rain slowly changing colour as it fell, with the contrast of the ground as it slowly picks up the colour of the paint-rain that fell earlier...

rainbow-rain in glasgow.... who would have thought!

        CG versus practical

Guys... it was ALL done practically. There was NO cg done on either that spot or the one with the balls
I trust you - but how do you know for sure? and why are they mentioning it in the blurb at the MPC site - does suggesting there was alot of CG involved make them seem like a better effects house? - There where a few shots that look so CG it's amazing that they weren't.

In a similar incident I heard that the motion tracking for Gollum in the Lord of the Rings that Weta kept boasting about was all thrown away, the finished animation was key framed by a bunch of old school (relatively speaking) animators. Every second CG article was about the motion capture rigs, I suppose if you spend a load of time and money developing something that in the end doesn't quite work - why not just lie and say it did work ? - who really knows ?

its well worth downloading the behind the scenes video that shows all the real explosions, the only things I can think of were a couple of the jets of paint rising up and exploding then again could have been 2 seperate bombs as most of those were suspended by crane, and maby a little mixed in to "enhance" the real paint

Im not sure who lied. It seems a little vague, but from what Ive read and heard, the final commercial was all practical. previs, who knows?

they do say that alot of pre-viz was done in 3d. but they also say that alot of it was "enhanced" in CG. plus crowd and practical rig removals as well
