It wasn't in three main ways, plus a few minor others:
1)borders: you needed a pssport to travel across countries, now frontiers go down entirely, much like between US states.
2)currency: major thing, as depending on how well the watchdogs will work, joining the Euro could be a definite benefit, or do like it did in Italy where prices soared by as much as 90% in the space of one year from introduction.
3)Regulations:while each union country is king within it's borders, there are some joint regulations and laws, debated at the European Parliament in Bruxelles, by elected government deputies.
All in all, it's a great opportunity for mutual growth, how it will pan out only time will tell
Percyman... think of the European Union like the United States... but it is a union of economy, instead of the union into one nation. Think of Bulgaria being Puerto Rico that just got made a state... Sorta.
The E U is not only an economic Union, it's a peacefull area where our
grand fathers made wars... they learnt to hate their neighboors and now
hopefully, we work together .

Precious description, indeed.
We're now over half a billion people under the same currency, but the cultural and historical differences are still there by and at large.
Some riches to plunder, i say
