ok, i've posted this in the 'Off Topic' area because i'm pretty sure this is a networking error. We are currently throwing rocks at this IT company who has come in to sort some errors out; with this one particular problem they are saying it's a 3dsMax application error, not a network error, but i'm pretty convinced they are wrong.
The problem: Every now and again, 3dsMax will seem to loose network connectivity. I won't be able to connect to any DR machines or Backburner. Shutting down 3dsMax and restarting solves the problem, but it's a pain in the arse and i've never noticed this until a few months ago after about 9 years of using the program.
This isn't specific to only my machine - other people in the office have the same problem. Our machines are still able to connect to the network etc., but my feelings are that every now and again the network drops out, but Windows reconnects itself so we won't notice the difference. If 3dsMax itself is running when this happens, however, it doesn't have the ability to reconnect... (this is my thinking, i could be totally wrong).
So, when starting, DR looks like this:

After a while, this happens:

I don't think this is a Vray specific error, because when trying to submit a job to Backburner, this happens:

As i say, closing 3dsMax and restarting sorts this problem out - for a while, until it happens again. This is really driving me mad, especially the DR bit because it's just so frickin slow to start, save, close, restart, etc. And you never know when DR is going to fail - when it does i literally have to sit for about 10 minutes watching each node fail in turn and having the 'not responding' message be printed - you can't cancel the render until Vray has gone through the entire list of DR slaves and worked out that none can be found on the network.
So, is this a network problem and can we tell the IT group they need to sort it out? Has anyone else ever seen this happen? Is it 3dsMax or a poorly managed network?
Thanks in advance for any help / advice / pointers.
