  • 3dsMax & Vray error or Network error?

ok, i've posted this in the 'Off Topic' area because i'm pretty sure this is a networking error. We are currently throwing rocks at this IT company who has come in to sort some errors out; with this one particular problem they are saying it's a 3dsMax application error, not a network error, but i'm pretty convinced they are wrong.

The problem: Every now and again, 3dsMax will seem to loose network connectivity. I won't be able to connect to any DR machines or Backburner. Shutting down 3dsMax and restarting solves the problem, but it's a pain in the arse and i've never noticed this until a few months ago after about 9 years of using the program.

This isn't specific to only my machine - other people in the office have the same problem. Our machines are still able to connect to the network etc., but my feelings are that every now and again the network drops out, but Windows reconnects itself so we won't notice the difference. If 3dsMax itself is running when this happens, however, it doesn't have the ability to reconnect... (this is my thinking, i could be totally wrong).

So, when starting, DR looks like this:

    After a while, this happens:

I don't think this is a Vray specific error, because when trying to submit a job to Backburner, this happens:

As i say, closing 3dsMax and restarting sorts this problem out - for a while, until it happens again. This is really driving me mad, especially the DR bit because it's just so frickin slow to start, save, close, restart, etc. And you never know when DR is going to fail - when it does i literally have to sit for about 10 minutes watching each node fail in turn and having the 'not responding' message be printed - you can't cancel the render until Vray has gone through the entire list of DR slaves and worked out that none can be found on the network.

So, is this a network problem and can we tell the IT group they need to sort it out? Has anyone else ever seen this happen? Is it 3dsMax or a poorly managed network?

Thanks in advance for any help / advice / pointers.

    hi,
yes, we do have the same problem here, I really don't what it is due to...
The problem appeared with Vray 1.5 , I tried to tell about it on the forum.
But I have no answer yet.
I have other contacts in France and many people have problems with
DR that disconnects after a while.

I've 5 computers, the network is stable with only 4 ones. But if the scene
is more or less big, the network becomes unstable.

I don't really know what to do too. It's a major problem.
We do not want invest in other computers for a bigger render farm
    that we could not use...

We suppose, it is vray, but we don't know.
We have Max 8 Sp3 and xp

    Bye,
    Gael

i'd rather think you have a network problem then a vray problem. Running 1.5 RCx with 10 DR slaves successfully here.

I also think it's more a network problem; i've also successfully run 10 DR slaves, but the problem is after a certain amount of time Vray and Max will disconnect from the network, (DR and backburner being unconnectable) even though i can still browse through explorer...

Anyone ever seen this specific error or problem?

I haven't seen that specific problem, but, I have three computers on an unmanaged hub and I have great difficulty getting one of my nodes to pick up work. The network seems fine if browsing through explorer and all the ip address' are there, it just refuses to pick up work.

Sometimes closing down and restarting the spawner will kickstart it back into action for a while (untill the next render) and I also have to go in and kill the spawner and max process'. Otherwise I have to reboot all my machines (and in a particular order) but this gets quite tiresome after a while.

I can't remember having this problem using vray1.47 but it just looks so much like a dodgy network issue that I'm just unsure... ...maybe it's vray......maybe it's the network....

Sorry I can't shed any more light on the matter SV.

          Rob.

cheers rob; nobody seems to have come accross it - it's got to be a network thing.....
I just wanted some more amo to throw back at this IT company...
