I still do like the idea of the RED, it has one serious design flaw tho. It's a CMOS camera. Wich basically means that matchmoving the footage is next to impossible...if you dont need to matchmove, go for it

It's a different type of cmos from the cheap on in the hv-20 that russ was talking about - I've got some footage from it and I'll ask someone to shoot some telephone poles to see if it has the wobble.

That's no good news at all.
Tracking is important in a number of productions, but even if it must be considered when creating serious CG work, red is definitely the best cam in its price range atm. Anyway I hope someone will think of a way to undistort it before tracking, since correcting it retouching the hardware would be fairly difficult.

Anyway, for those of you who want to know about some more techie features of the cam, take a look at this presentation:

Especially the videos called "Why red matters" Part 1 and 2. Even though it's all very fanboyish, it's very informative.

They're hoping to reduce the bending in their footage in their next software version and as a friend of mine quite rightly pointed out most films aren't going to use open gate so the crop bar is going to reduce the amount further again - not totally ideal but hopefully workable.
