    @werticus

Could you tell us the specs for your computer and what kind of cooling system you use?

    Thanks

werticus, what is the CPU temp à full load ?

With a 667 Mhz RAM you can get 3 Ghz for the CPU with a FSB/DRAM ratio at 1:1
      333*9 = 2997 Mhz
      In teapots we trust.

          50c under full load

          q6600 @ 3.6ghz 8 gb ddr2 800 @ 400*9

got headroom for more clocking really with such a low temp.
the water cooling - is a Kandalf case with optional water cooling thingo. works well. its also cooling the video card x2900

            Thanks!

... is the system noiseless or dos it sound like a home fishtank?

its quietish... it does have three 120mm fans on the radiator though so its not even close to silent, but i've found it to be average noise wise.

I agree with Tog on this, it's where I've got mine with stock cooler, no problems whatsoever , as for temps it varies according to core (I don't know exactly why but suspect it has to do with proximity to voltage pins?!) so I would say 40-46 depending on the core, u cold use for instance core temp -> http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ to monitorize em

I would say to definitely OC it !!!!

My settings are identical to those as well and the cores under load are max 54c with air cooling.

There is no reason NOT to oc the cpu. Just remember to get a decent oc'ing motherboard.

thanks for all the help guys!

I ordered the comp yesterday (weee!)

Got 8 gigs of 667 mhz ram, since the guy who sold it to me thought it would be enough if I didnt oc to more than 3 ghz or so.
Ordered the cpu-cooler "Scythe Ninja Plus"... hope it will be enough to keep the temp down.

the mb is "ASUS P5K -E" (instead of the Asus p5k in my first post)... Good enough, or...?

changed the graphicsboard to a MSI GF8800GTS 640 mb... not a big difference in price for the extra memory, and more importantly, there was a 2 week deliverytime on the other one

                    thanks again

Cool, the p5k is a great board so the e should be even better. I've had my ne e6850 running smoothly on one at 3.78ghz for a while now.

righto... took a little longer than planned (as always) but now Ive got it and I couldnt be happier with it. =)
tried the benchmark in this thread: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...ight=benchmark

                            time: 1 min 43 sek...
cpu: q6600 overclocked to 3.0 GHZ
                            ram: 8 gigs 667
                            winXP64, max9 64, and Vray 64

my old comp needed almost 6 minutes for the same scene so its a huge increase in speed!

should point out though that I use rc5 and not rc3 which the benchmark was designed for... maybe that affects the rendertime?

thanks for all your help and suggestions earlier... at 3.0 GHZ it seems to be perfectly stable, just as you said

                              Nice time!!

I got to 3.6ghz with my Q6600 last night, bu its not 100% stable.. I would say about 95% haha.. yeah orthos got an unexpected result back duing its cpu test phase.. so just need to give a couple of tweaks in the bios and it should be all sorted

3.6 GHZ! thats a 50% increase over factory clocking! pretty cool...
do you use watercooling or is it just a heatsink/fan?

My scythe ninja seems to be working fine at 3 ghz, very quiet and not too hot. (although I dont know the exact temp - how do you check this?)

make sure to do the benchmark once you get it stable! at 3.6 ghz youll probably be just over the minute!
