well everything sounds bold but you can use it for rolling out software, integrate it with other apps as u wish. It's powerful and versatile tho there are issues here and there of course. Check the docs on "cmdjob" it has examples for AE and setting reg values for example.

Check out "cmdjob" I believe is the spelling, with it you can execute just about anything from bat files to exe on the slaves, there is even an example to edit the reg files on the slaves.

EDIT: doh, posted from page 1 didn't see these last two posts...

the reference has a bunch of samples as mentioned. simply search the backburner reference for "cmdjob" and you'll get 2 distinct pages with info on the different bits and pieces.

basically all that cmdjob does is run any commandline command you want via backburner. So if you got a windows installer for example you can place it on a network share and submit a job that executes the msi in silent mode with predefined answers via backburner. There's a switch that runs the command on each slave once as a normal job would lead to the command beeing executed on some slaves or multiple times on some slaves.

I see what you mean, so cmdjob can execute pretty much any command line?
Maya comes with its own command line renderer called mayabatch.exe and managers typically take advantage of that, so what you are saying is that I could use backburner to execute mayabatch.exe?

The submittal needs to be scripted to be effective IMO, so you'll need to brush up on the maxscript submittal stuff. I haven't tried it with the latest bacburner but in the past the per server switch has been broke, the slave ID's get mixed up and duplicated so it is not (or was not) ideal for updating software across the farm where you need to make sure a cmdjob has executed once on each node.

cmdjob is an exe so you can launch it from the commandline
