It looks like it's heading in a positive direction. It will be interesting to see what happens. Keep your fingers crossed. Cox is coming around I think....

I still don't understand his reluctance to just implement the way that the CS2 EXR import module works. Yes it's not techinally correct, yes it's broken, yes it's "illegal", but doesn't it do exactly what everyone wants it to do (put the alpha into a channel rather than into transparency)? All this talk about premultiplied/overs/straight/etc. is nice and all but it worked before just by copying the CS2 plugin into the CS3 folder. Just give us an equivalent plugin for CS4 and call it "OpenEXR (Legacy)" and be done with it!

              hey clifton santiago

              3) Keeping a version of CS3 extended, with the CS2 importer (openEXR.8bi): This is the best option. Just open and save as a 32-bit PSD file, and then open in CS4.

I have CS4 32 bit and CS4 64 bit installed on my machine

I have copied the CS2 importer into CS4 32 bit and it works fine so you could use CS4 32 bit instead of CS3 extended
it doesnt work with the with CS 4 64 bit though

Thanks. But the difference might be that I have CS4 Extended. I have tried that plugin in both the 32 and 64 bit Extended versions, but it didn't work in either.

is the exr problem solved if you use the proexr plugin?

Why did I miss all the fun...

None of the links to the Adobe forum seems to work. Do they require a log on?

@raymarcher: ProEXR does solve the problem, but it writes the alpha channel and any render elements as layers. It takes an extra step, but its pretty good. As I recall though, it converts the EXR to a 16-bit file (or it could be the ILM EXR plugin that does that... can't remember), which is why I don't use it. I usually just save the EXR without alpha, and also save the alpha channel to a separate file, and then copy it into the image file.

Though lately I have been doing so much montaging/compositing in photoshop that I have just been using the default EXR importer and not worrying about it. After all the stink, I have reluctantly conformed...

I kinda understand why adobe isn't well up to date and aware of the problem (I hope they are now with that monster thread), I went to some super high quality retouche/photo studios and there they didn't ever heard of openexr formats, and those people are their biggest user base I guess, so that perhaps explains some of it, not all.

Yeah, they probably will have full exr support as one of the main features for CS5, so to give a reason to upgrade.
