  • 3dsmax.exe process running after 2010 exit

Anyone else notice 3ds Max 2010 leaving 3dsmax.exe processes running after you quit? I haven't put my finger on the exact cause of it - but several times have noticed I'd have 5 or so 3dsmax.exe processes going at the end of the day (none doing anything, just using up 200MB of RAM)...

We're using V-Ray and a couple free plugs - greeble, dem2max, colorcorrect and bercon maps. I'm going to start removing the freebies one at a time to try and figure out what is causing this - in the meantime I thought I'd get the discussion moving in case we're not the only ones seeing this...

There was a similar issue in some of the beta versions of 3ds Max 2010, but I have not seen it with the final so far.

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

I think it has something to do with Vista and user permissions.

If you run a session as administrator it should exit properly. If you configure the properties of your shortcuts to run as administrator it will exit properly. If you open a max file through windows explorer the program will reside in memory upon exit. I have yet to find a way to always run max as administrator.

No Vista here - we're all XP 32/64 although the only machines I've noticed the multiple process issue on are XP 64. I'll check into the XP 32 ones too...

FYI - I *think* the process is related to the ColorCorrect plugin. From my tests it seems like accessing the CC map causes 3dsmax.exe to get stuck in the task manager after exit.

I've reported the bug at Cuneyt's forum for CC.

FYI - for anyone who finds this thread via search.

The problem of 3dsmax.exe processes not terminating has been solved by James Haywood by adding some maxscript code that utilizes dot net for forcibly terminate max on exit. It's been working perfectly for us for several days now. Actually it has the added benefit of making max exit after large projects instantly instead of taking quite a while to unload.

                        Driving me nuts to!!!

And those lingering exes interfere with other programs (causing dialog boxes to hang and whatnot).
