I've done it. Be honest with you, I didn't have the best of luck as the slaves were all spotty when connecting. Only time I ever had a smooth run was with Windows server. But recently, that machine died.
I upgraded to a linux box/server just a couple of weeks ago and it has been running amazing ever since.

As I understand, Windows XP/Vista 32/64 machines networked together have a 10 PC simultaneous connection limit. In order to add additional machines to your render farm, you would need to put your Render Manager on a Windows Server based Machine which opens up the connection limit.

from what i read its 10 per second unless you hotwire your tcpip.sys file. there is a specific one to look for since there are a few files with that name
