  • vRoom plugin for LW - fake interiors - awesome

Would be great to see something like this in Max/VRay!

      Would be helpful indeed.

Looks like it's based to this:

There is the source code if someone wants to make a port to MAX :P

That would be a very useful shader.
I first saw this technique in a presentation on the VFX of Batman Begins a few years ago. They used it to create realistic buildings in Gotham City. IIRC they created a huge library of cubic maps made from photos taken in various rooms in office buildings, and then the shader would assign the maps on a semi random basis.

That's definitely scriptable alright. I'd have a crack at it if I had the time. It seems quite doable based on the normal of a polygon.

how would you script that? as far as i understand it, it's a shader, not some rendertime geometry/proxy thing...

after the second look i'm not so sure...i wonder how it is set up and where the real benefit is, compared to simply modeling the inside.

Yes I see what you mean after reading more - I'm sure you could make some kind of parametric object or process to do similar since it's just some extrudes and face assignments - what they've done there is very smart though.

looks cool. I would need to be able to render this out as a separate pass though. Which doesn't seem like it would be impossible.

http://eat3d.com/materials see 4th item allready exists in unreal engine

I can see chaosgroup implementing something like this since vray is still most used for architecture for wich this shader is perfect

Has or does anyone produce a decent library of room interiors for this though?

I imagine a lot of us would opt to make them ourselves (spherical HDR renders of 3D interiors), because as you hint, theres probably not a lot around! Or maybe that guy would sell just his HDR library..

It is rather easy to implement. Did a quick proof of concept outputting colors per wall. Works like a charm. Outputting it as a seperate pass would be easy enough with either a Mtl_Select or as a ExtraTex element. Prolly wont have any time to actually create something usable. If anybody has, dont fear it's pretty straight forward
