That would be a very useful shader.
I first saw this technique in a presentation on the VFX of Batman Begins a few years ago. They used it to create realistic buildings in Gotham City. IIRC they created a huge library of cubic maps made from photos taken in various rooms in office buildings, and then the shader would assign the maps on a semi random basis.
Yes I see what you mean after reading more - I'm sure you could make some kind of parametric object or process to do similar since it's just some extrudes and face assignments - what they've done there is very smart though.
Has or does anyone produce a decent library of room interiors for this though?
I imagine a lot of us would opt to make them ourselves (spherical HDR renders of 3D interiors), because as you hint, theres probably not a lot around! Or maybe that guy would sell just his HDR library..
It is rather easy to implement. Did a quick proof of concept outputting colors per wall. Works like a charm. Outputting it as a seperate pass would be easy enough with either a Mtl_Select or as a ExtraTex element. Prolly wont have any time to actually create something usable. If anybody has, dont fear it's pretty straight forward
