Is there a way to add a noise modifier to something while keeping the border un-touched? I have a site, with grass, that I would like to add noise to it, but I want the edge along the curb to be left alone.

yes, its called mesh select modifier. choose that, and then you can select verts/edges/faces etc. Keep those selected in subobject mode then apply your noise modifier. It will only affect those selected subobjects.

You can even use soft selection within the mesh select so that you have a nice transition.

OK. I was able to select the open edges, use the softselect, but I actually want the reversed selection.

That didn't work. it did something strange, like it selected everything.

You can also use the graphite modeling tools to just freehand paint the noise!

Try the Volume Select mod. Far and away the most versatile selection tool. You can make a selection of verts using a box volume gizmo and set the falloff from there.

One of the best things about Vol.Select is that it does not use a specific array of vert or face numbers. So if the topology changes below the VolSelect mod, you still have consistent results.
