    Hello-

Here is something that causes me problems, but I just usually deal with it. When I pick the edge of a poly, hold the ctrl down to drag a copy, the poly gets this smooth modifier or something applied to it. I deal with it by detaching the new polygones. Once I detach the smooth modifier seems to go away. It is almost like the automatic smooth modifier that is applied to a loft.

    Any way around this?

Do you have an image to illustrate this? It sounds like a smoothing group issue.

use Edit Poly, edit mesh is the problem. Edit poly is way better to work with too.

Yep...that is just a smoothing group problem. If you are going to start modeling in that fashion. Follow these steps and all should be fine. I just tested inside of Max2011 with editable mesh/poly with the same results.

            Create Rectangle
Convert to Editable Mesh/Poly (Doesn't matter which, this works for both)
Go to Poly mode, select all Polys
Under the Surface Properties Rollout -> Smoothing Group Subsection -> Click the "Clear All" button
You can now edge extrude with no smoothing group problems.
