    patiently

    1. Maybe start of with a plane and polys, edit, add polys, edit. etc
    2. Or maybe start with couple of cylinders, add noise modifier, add poly edit, move vertices as needed.

Well, if it HAS to be exact, just model with splines and make them renderable/viewable. Then afterwards convert to poly and scale some of the larger branches up by hand.

If your willing to give blender a try It has a script that is called trees from curves in 2.49. it works really well. you draw up your splines (curves) and then apply the script. It creates one continuous connected mesh (all of the branches are connected to the base) that you can then adjust. I used it for the exact same thing you are doing right now.

Im sure there is a script on script spot that allows you to draw splines and then it converts them to polys to make tree type shapes...worth doing a search.

I know that nPower has some utilities that creates tube like junctions pretty easily. I used it a long while back, huge life saver. It does cost a little bit, so other options may be more affordable, but it is a great toolset to have around in Max!

Could try experimenting with ivy generator without the leaves... for the base. Main trunks you could do by hand.
