How would you simulate cloud shadows? Would a projection map be the best? I would be curious to see how much realism it ads to an exterior scene. has anybody tried?

Somebody was doing great clouds with Vray volumetric fog a while back. They were even sharing the scene file. I believe it rendered quickly and- of course - cast shadows.

You could map the transparency of an invisible plane and position it above your scene - it would offer more control.

I think the effect does enhance scenes.

I remember playing with that, but I never thought the results were all that great. Maybe I can use it just for the shadows.

If you strategically painted a mask and do as jeff says it could make the structure stand out against a bland foreground if that is what the issue is...I would still be careful not to make the effect too strong though.

I think the effect is probably more appropriate for large development renders.

I've done it on massive site aerials but i'd never bother on something smaller. Difference clouds in photoshop, levels, opacity map, render channel & overlay in ps.

I've stuck a plane object in the sky with an animated noise pattern on it and it worked quite well with a saved solution. Look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KduVyLdSNZw at 2:18 for an idea. It served its purpose for this animation and could be refined a lot further.

Wow, very cool idea with the lights going up in the buildings as the description appears.
              Great anim overall!

you should post it under gallery(tricky) for future reference... I like it a lot, very easy way to understand a project.

very nice, i really like the animation! but one question... the sky is stock footage composed in post and the animated noisemap was only for the shadows, am i right? looks like hell of a timeconsuming renderwork if those clouds were cg-animated vray-fog clouds?

                    best regards,
