        lol true

charlotte NC was booming and i've done renderings for quite a few mansions out there, they cost tons of money, the architect was earning well but it still doesnt mean that its good.

I would really like to hear your explanation on why people need to spend money on photo-real renderings, the pencil sketch comparison did not say anything about that. But whenever you have the time, i do want to post a few images to this thread but odds are i wont be able to access them in months... if i ever even do.

I don't think you can show someone almost what it is going to look like.

We take a risk in specializing in something, but that is the risk we take. We have architects here (7 on staff) who sketch elevations, add some color, and that is good enough. We have an intern that uses Sketch Up, and that works, too. We are finding more and more that clients need to pre-sell before they get financing, and colored elevations and Sketch-Up models, just don't fly. I believe in the value I bring, otherwise I wouldn't do it.

I remember someone commenting on our work, posted on our site, as very 70's and out-of-date. I just giggled, becasue we do over 100 million dollars a year with our aged, out-of-date, designs. Just like my renderings all look the same. Shouldn't they, they are done by me. If people keep buying my services, based on my portfolio, I'll keep doing them.

          Okay, a little passive aggression

Exactly what i wanted to hear. So it's commercial after all. Real artists are hungry and don't care about any kind of clients, they just do their art!

I always hated that ad. Using the image of those people to sell computers just rubbed me the wrong way when I saw it.

First, equating Martin Luther King/civil rights to buying a Mac instead of a PC just struck me as incredible crass. Second, the ad seems to imply some type of limited endorsement by those in it for apple, which is just crazy. (kind of reminds me of those Gap ads from a few year ago for khakis (e.g., "Frank Lloyd Wright wore khaki's). I hated those too. It's a very clever ad, I just think it's in bad taste to a certain extent.

The same reason why i wouldn't call the pencil drawings up there art, is the same reason why i wouldnt call 99% of arch viz art.
Well arch viz is not art but...arch viz.
I'd love to do renders with dramatic mood. Thunderstorm. At least a night shot.
I often try, but my clients say: The sky needs to be blue, everything has to look friendly and bright, etc.

Although I think it's fine to call ourselves artists, I never really though of what I do or what I produce "art". Rather than an artist I really think of myself more as a craftsman. Keeping the analogy in architecture/construction, I equate it to building a fine stair. The architect may draw up the stair, but it takes a true master craftsman to execute that stair into a beautiful, functional object. The same stair given to a simple carpenter just will not turn out as nice.

Just because something is artistic does not make it art, and just because it's art doesn't make it nice to look at (duchamp's fountain comes to mind). Arch viz needs to do both, with trade-offs sometimes.

agree with yuo 100% i call this craft, and i consider myself a craftsman, who ventures into art occasionally

Artist, artisan are persons having superior skill or ability, or who are capable of producing superior work. An artist is a person engaged in some type of fine art. An artisan is engaged in a craft or applied art.

An illustration is a visualization such as a drawing, painting, photograph or other work of art that stresses subject more than form. The aim of an illustration is to elucidate or decorate textual information (such as a story, poem or newspaper article) by providing a visual representation.

I am sure there are people who couldn't care less, but these people are the least likely to work with a professional illustrator anyway. so it doesn't really make any difference from my point of view.
this caricature of the client as someone clueless who needs education, it's true only to a certain point. most of the architects I know, do have a clue, and care quite a lot about the quality of the representation of their work.
