  • switch to opengl and max lightning fast

    Hi all

So I'm on a 2013 scene with 100's of thousands of objects (imported from sketchup). After hiding all objects and trying to switch material types etc, max would sit and do something for up to 5 minutes in Nitrous. Viewport can hardly move. Switching to OpenGL fixes this and max is lightning fast now. Responsive as should be etc. Obviously you loose all the nice viewport display of realistic materials etc, but at least you can work without waiting 5 minutes in between each keypress...
    Kind Regards,

I think OpenGL is the slowest of all the modes...

Actually in this case with this current scene, OpenGL is very fast in wireframe and runs circles around Nitrous. However, here is some more info that is driving me nuts:

I have a scene (original Sketchup > 3ds > max) with 100's of thousands of objects. About 60 odd materials. Due to mapping being specific I'm manually converting the standard materials to VRay Materials (latest vray 2.3) - Yes I'm NOT using the VRayScene Converter in this case. Even with ALL OBJECTS HIDDEN, after I get to like the 10th or 11th subobject material, max just suddenly slows down to a crawl. Just to change a colour swatch (not even a bitmap) takes sometimes like 2 minutes or longer for max to respond. I thought maybe it's an UNDO issue so I set UNDO levels to just 1. This didn't help. With Nitrous, I have viewport progressive refinement switched OFF. I tried switching to OpenGL and the viewports are actually MUCH more responsive in wireframe. In OpenGL it seems to last longer before the slowdowns start again. I'm not even at the render stage yet.

        I'm on Win7 64bit with 16GB Ram. i7 2600k and 2 X SSD in raid 0. I have an ATI 6990 4GB with the lastest drivers (Catalyst 12.6). Max has the latest update3 installed.

Anything that I can try even if it is the smallest thing?
        Kind Regards,
        Morne

hmm ok actually there are only 37220 objects in the scene (no splines). "7" says there are 1 5 22 323 Polys and 2 863 105 Verts. I'm getting average FPS about 4.5 in OpenGL. I Nitrous I can hardly move the viewport.

O copied all my textures local and also switched material browser to previous like so:

now things are flying again and work is a pleasure again, just like life
