Does anyone know how I can do this ? I've tried various scripts but not had any luck.

266 objects...assigning 266 material id's ?

If you only have one mesh per object, and object transforms are irrelevant to you, I'd:
- Collapse all objects to one
- Assign a "material by element modifer", set to random and 266 id's
- Optionally Explode to individual objects again.
- Optionally use the Transform palette to recenter pivots to I.e center, and min-z.
Probably easier if you can scriptSigning out,

It works for me, but i havent testet it with 266 ojects...
