  • 3DS MAX 2013 Bitmap Quality

has anybody figured out how to increase the bitmap quality in 2013? I am trying to draft over a jpg, but the quality is awful I tried everything, but nothing is working.

do you by chance have bitmap proxies enabled? On the second thought, are you saving or loading I did not get that...

I enabled bitmap proxy to see if it would help, but it didn't. I have a plane, which I dropped a bitmap on. All I want to do is see it clearly. It was easy to address in previous releases of MAX, but it's not the same as it was.

For your Blueprint ( reference image)
Select a DirectXshader in the list of materials, instead of a standard or a Vray.. ( turn on show incompatible, as you will not see it in your selections otherwise)
In the Direct X shader select "blend_dxsas.fx"
in the top texture, load the .jpg you want to use.

Now, you have a crisp.. really crisp image to draw on top of..

          Hope it helps

Often I have to load a backplate into my viewport background. I need that to track shots of cars and so on. Unfortunately, the backplates get very pixelated in Max2013, which makes it hard to closely match my objects to the references in the background. Is there any workaround for that, too?

have you tried various hardware filtering configs to see if anything helps?

regarding this topic... is it somehow possible, probably with this script, to change the resolution of viewport background images? i tried all settings of the viewport and the nitrous settings (are there any?) to no avail...

as we do most of our camera matching for archviz directly and manual in the viewport (lots of very distorted images taken with bad consumer cameras are give to us - we developed a good and speedy manual workflow for that) and it is very cumbersome with the poor pixely quality of the background image... the workflow would be perfect if you could only see the background in original size or at least not as lowres and blocky as it is now.

                        cheers,

                        christoph.

the script made a mess of things for me, and it took me hours to get back to where I could work. The DirectXshader tip worked on my laptop, but caused me workstation to grind to a halt. So, I am still looking for a solution.

I have the same problem as you, but I didn't find a good solution yet. There is a workaround using bitmap proxies, but that is a lot of work.

Thanks thablanch, that is a real help, quite often...

edit: update, still great, but note the image must be rgb vs. grayscale. (At least for my max2012)
