  • Working from home

I now have a machine at home so I can continue working from there if required. I have a VPN connection set up so I can have vray find the license. It works fine.

However, if I, for example, archive a project whilst I am in the office, and bring that file home with me, unzip it and launch the max file, I believe my system will be pointing to all the texture files on our office server. With larger files with lots of high resolution textures, this obviously takes far too long.

What is the best way to have my max file at home point locally to all my textures (that were extracted from the archive), but when I am in the office, have it point to my server? We use UNC naming for all our textures (i.e. \\server\assets\textures\timber\ash.jpg for instance).
    Kind Regards,

Two things I can recommend. Use mapped drive so at home and in the office the drive letters are the same (but paths can be different) so long as their resulting directories are the same. Or at home you can add your directory to custom user paths, so max looks there if it can't find the textures anywhere else, but the paths remain unchanged, so when you bring it back to the office it also will work.

if you had to keep the unc paths, but you only have 1 server with stuff on at work, you can go the whole hog and rename your workstation at home the same as the server in the office, and give it the same drive letter. bit of a drastic solution but means all your files will work as they are.

I use Chromes Remote Desktop and control my office machine from home. 30Mb at home, and 30Mb in the office, and no delays.

Not sure if it is still the case, but Max used to look in the same directory as your scene file for maps first, regardless of any map path information. If this is still the case you should be able to dump the maps in the same directory as your scene and be good to go. I know I used to do this regularly, but haven't tried it in some years...

I am not sure why you are asking... well, I know why you are, but isn't as easy as setting "Convert local file paths to Relative" in your Preference Settings.

I may give that a try.

I will give this another try tonight.

I am copying our entire ASSETS folder to an external hard disk which I will connect to my home PC. We need to use UNC naming so that DR works when our slaves are set with spawner as a process.

So, work address of ASSETS is as follows:-

\\server\bank\ASSETS\TEXTURES\rug\ (for example). This drive has a mapped letter of W:

My home drive will be set to have a drive letter W:. But the same folder will look like this:-

                  W:\ASSETS\TEXTURES\rug

Ideally, I don't want to copy all my textures into one folder when working at home. I would rather leave the structure the same, so that when I set up materials/shaders at home, they will work correctly when I move back to the office.
                  Kind Regards,
                  Richard Birket

I just use Relink Bitmaps to switch the textures from our remote servers (that I VPN into as well), and set it to "All Bitmaps" (which will make the script not care if they're missing or not, try and relink them anyway), and point it to my local copy of all the textures.

Colin - just re-discovered this script last night. I will hopefully put it to the test this weekend. Seems ideal though. Good work.

If you set your project folders, when u are archiving the files meaning go to Utilities ( the little hammer) the click on More, and look for resource collector, and the that will essentially grab any texture bitmaps etc. you are using and move the to your images folder (that was created when using Set project folder) There is an option for Including the Max file, Compress and make a zip, and you could choose to move the files or copy. That seems to work fine with me. And you wanna make sure you check the update materials so the materials will get the correct path in your project folder.
