How about 2 hemispherical domes cut out from each other. (or just one of them with a shell modifier)
Edit poly to chamfer edges
Then stick on a bend
then some minor scale adjustments
Done
OR
make hemisperical dome and edit poly and delete some polys
shell
chamfer corners

Maybe, but I find it difficult to manipulate the 'higher edges' so that they follow the same spherical form as the rest of the bowl. Maybe I need to take a chill-pill and have another goKind Regards,

yep, I'd also say polymodeling is the fastest method. even though I can imagine it can get quite frustrating if you've never modeled anything that way before. might be a good exercise for future models though, so I guess it's worth both effort and time.

(Just seeing Morbids post above. He says in one sentence what takes me many Do that ^ )
This model is all about getting that top edge curve to curve down but still follow the shape of a sphere.
You have two options.
1)The boolean option
2)Graphite modeling tools polydraw/draw on surface/step build option where you can use a sphere as a reference object
and build on top of to get that top edge curve. This way is the cleanest model but does require some freehand. The point is
that you are freehand modeling/conforming always to the shape of a sphere.
Try the boolean path first. Its really quick with a bit of cleanup. Start with a low res sphere. The object you will want to boolean your sphere with
looks like a the top edge of the bowl from the side view. It's your sine wave. Clean it, squash it, shell it, taper the top edges, add edge loops to the hard edges, turbosmooth it, and done.Last edited by AbeMata; 11-09-2013, 10:04 AM.

Ha! I had a stab too. Topology is too dense and not the neatest, plus I think I added to much curve to the initial profile, but in case it's of interest
