  • Help me create a material

I'm really struggling to achieve this cross-hatched metallic surface looking any good. Anyone got any tips? Its going to be used on quite a large area and the camera is around 3m away from it, so it can't really repeat at all.

I suppose the basic metal shader shouldn't be a problem for you, so the challenge is getting the Bump map.
A quick idea on how to do this would be a couple of stretched out noise maps multiplied over each other, rotated at 45 and -45 degrees.

Completely procedural and very adjustable. To tweak the length and density of the scratches, adjust noise thresholds and tiling amount. If you want to take it further - add a few more layers with smaller/larger scratches, use large scale noise as layer masks, get some scratches with less depth by using lower opacity on a layer, etc. sky's the limit

Thanks for this - I will take a look. I've been trying to get the material to work using this approach, but for some reason, I get tiling happening:-

Here's a bitmap-based approach, Richard. The map I'm using is not detailed or accurate enough really, but it shows one way to approach the material.

You might consider photographing your (assuming it's your) sample piece of metal in a very even light. A little work in Pshop and you may very well end up with an excellent and accurate map.

        Hope this helps some,
