  • 3d Studio Max 2016 revealed

    At least in parts:

    http://cgpress.org/archives/3ds-max-...enovation.html

    • New Max Creation Graph – a new node-based content and tool creation toolkit integrated by user request. Enables users to extend 3DS Max with geometric objects and modifiers. Users can package graphs and share them with other users.
    • New XRef Renovations – externally reference objects to scenes and animate/edit material on the XRef object in the source file without having to merge the object into the scene, non-destructive animation workflows and improved XRef stability simplify collaboration among teams and throughout the production pipeline.
    • Scene Explorer and Layer Manager improvements – working with complex scenes is now easier.
    • New Physical Camera – supports real-life camera settings for visualization (developed with Chaos Group).
    • New Iray and Mental Ray support – support for new Iray and Mental Ray enhancements.
    • Alembic support – View massive data sets in the Nitrous viewport.
    • Small user-requested features from the User Voice forum, which include viewport selection preview, Cut tool improvements, ability to visualize hard and smooth edges, etc.
    • Camera Sequencer
    • Dual Quaternion skinning – create better skinned characters in less time.
    • OpenSubdiv support – create complex topology more quickly.
    • Enhanced ShaderFX – create and exchange advanced shaders more easily.
    • A360 rendering support (with subscription) – render in the cloud right from within 3DS Max.
    • Easier Revit and SketchUp workflows – import data from Revit up to 10 times faster.
    • Autodesk Translation Framework – exchange data with SolidWorks, other file formats.
    • Multitouch 3D navigation support.
    • New Design Workspace and Template Systems – the Design Workspace provides easy access to object placement, lighting, rendering, modeling and texturing tools to create high-quality stills and animations; built-in settings for rendering, environments, lighting and units.
    • 3DS Max and 3DS Max Design are coming together.
    Cheers,
    Thorsten

"New Physical Camera – supports real-life camera settings for visualization (developed with Chaos Group)."

does this mean it's meant to be used instead of the current vray cam? any advantages/disadvantages?

It's mean to be used instead of the V-Ray one, yes. It has the same capabilities, but the viewport integration is better and the UI is somewhat better orgranized.

        Best regards,
        Vlado

                  I like this part

                  XRef Renovations
Collaboration across teams and throughout the production pipeline is now easier thanks to new support for non-destructive animation workflows in XRef and improved stability. 3ds Max users can now reference objects into their scene from outside files and can animate them or edit materials. For example, one sofa can be used multiple files and the fabrics be unique to each file it's used. In the same way, a character or object with animation assigned in the base file can be adjusted in every file it's used. The same character file will have the Running in one file, jogging in another. As always, changes made in the source file will automatically be inherited in their local scene. Also new is the ability of artists to publish animatable parameters. This allows the published parameters to be quickly accessed directly in the modifier stack for quick adjustment or animation.
                  show me the money!!

Last week I was ogling the demo videos of RailClone, but it seems Max will now be able to do pretty much everything that does. Neato!

I think Railclone will always be a better product as the way it handles memory and is deeply integrated with VRay.

I am not seeing a reason to upgrade, at least not for me, at least not yet. I think I'll wait until I get tired of everyone talking about stuff I don't have.

Yeah, I doubt i'll stop using railclone but this looks great for slick animation stuff.
with the fact that modules are tiny files that can be transferred around easily too I hope scriptspot opens up a new section for MCG modules. a good community around it making stuff would be a game changer.
