You have a max "normal bump" map nested inside a Vraynormal bump map.

Are you using gamma 2.2.?

The problem you are having is probably due to the set up of the normal maps for gamma 2.2.

Max is not very clever and it is also correcting gamma on normal maps.
What you can do is:

Open the normal map and in “Output” add 2,2 in “output amount” spin box:

This will fix the problem with gamma corrected normal maps.

ahhh thank you! We've had this issue with axyz people too. I've been turning off the bump as a quick fix. Thanks for posting the solution!
