I was checking out Modo and Nuke Studio...impressive software...definitely giving Autodesk and Adobe a run for their money. Modo isn't to bad at $1800 USD, but the full suite is a whopping $10,000! Also noticed that they have a rental program that allows you to own a single license at the end (they just divide the single license price into payments)...pretty sweet. It's also quarterly, as apposed to monthly.
I think we have to remember that price is never set by costs in a free market, it's set by what customers will pay. These prices indicate, at the very least, that our industry (CGI as a whole) is in good shape.
