no matter which provider of the 3d models there is always something plastic about them when they are not in motion, has anyone come up with any techniques using the existing maps from the existing people 3d model providers to enhance so to speak the realism of these people, been trying a few things and so far its not been so great, especially where the skin is concerned

Are you using gamma 2.2.?
The problem you are having is probably due to the set up of the normal maps for gamma 2.2.
Max is not very clever and it is also correcting gamma on normal maps.
What you can do is:
Open the normal map and in “Output” add 2,2 in “output amount” spin box:
