We'll see how it goes. I won't say no, but I won't negotiate price, either.

I haven't heard back, however, I was thinking about something today. I saw an add, on Facebook, and I inquired about it. It was for one of those whiteboard animations (looks hand drawn). For a 30 second animation, it starts at $7500. Now, for me, it's not even remotely accessible to my budget, but, if I was selling a 2 million dollar something, it would be a small price to pay. The same should say for a 2 million dollar house. If they really thought the whiteboard animation would help them sell the property, they would do it.

            Hi Bobby,

Stills and animations are really worlds apart. Its very easy to say that whatever costs you to do for 1 still, can be multiplied by x100 for animation *roughly speaking of course.

I do mostly animations, have farm etc. I have been more disappointed in remote farms, mainly because of the costs. It can easily cost $10,000 to render one round of animation, which is usually your half budget already.

All of what was said above is valid too about render settings, flickering etc etc. With stills you just don't worry about it.

Since I deal with some what architectural animations often, its not far fetched to have budgets of $50,000 or more. If you do sell them on the cost, you then must be prepared to commit and do the job. So the question you gotta ask your self - are you prepared to do the animation job? Your single workstation will not cut it, and the remote farm would be too expensive.

When I started out I immediately had 4 systems to render on, and was struggling...so quickly I realized that if I was to stay competitive in this business I had to have the proper render power. If you pursuit the animation later on, it'll certainly pay well and imho worth the effort if you can get there.

What's the saying? If you have an opportunity, take it and figure out how to do it later. I have the hunch that the example their real estate broker had them look at was done, on the cheap, over seas. It is simply paths, so nothing but the camera is moving. My quote was a 4-minute animation for $30,000. We'll see what happens. After listening to you guys, I know I will not nudge in price. I think some people have the same thought I had about the $7500 whiteboard animation, which was, who can afford that. I have people ask for quotes and when they see the cost, they basically say, "thanks, but no thanks" and they find some guy who will do it on the cheap. The guy who does it on the cheap, for the most part, doesn't do the best work, but for a lot, it is good enough. I don't want to compete with them, but that thought (people doing it for cheap) is alway in the back of my mind when I quote. Those mansions I have been doing. The developer keeps telling me that at 1/2 my price I am 2X more expensive than everyone else. I got some assets from his previous guy and everything is in Chinese. Nothing wrong with it, but the guy obviously likes my work more, however, he doesn't understand that it costs more, too.

can't beat the chinese and render farm prices i can tell you arent great at all for animations, you will always need a big budget, was rendering some stils today with ranchfarms and i see based on the test they are rendering much slower than my pc, in the end the price got crazy for a few frames, had to cancel with no hope of a refund in sight, anyone knowing a good farm please recommend it in pm, i heard from a friend that a few new ones are around but hav no clue where to look, sorry to hijack.

What happened to Vray Cloud? Seemed very promising, but the website shutdown... It was CPU, and you could select how many threads you wanted if i remember correctly.

If you have the need to render some things I can help you out (I rent my farm out to anyone who needs to have rendering done). Send me a pm we can talk things over there.

just a quick one if anyone has seen this, currently i have credits on ranch farms and rendering some images but what they do is change the file priority in their que and even though the file can be rendered in say an hour they delay it but stil the price keeps going up so am getting charged more than what i should , is this whole render farm thing a rip off?

Yep! You pay for priority and faster machines. If you go on the cheap, your project gets bumped and you get the slow machines.

dam! which means then better to render at weired hours on farms when no one else is using it, basically meaning now the project i have running will run out of funds before it even finishes, dammm dam dam
