Show map in viewport problem - max 7

Can anyone help me, I have just got a copy of 3D Max 7 at work and when I toggle the show map in viewport in the materials panel, it doesn't display the map int e viewport.

It renders OK but obviously in order to map correctly I need to see it. Has anyone else have this problem or have I turned something off my mistake.
It works on other copies of max so my guess is I have toggeled something

you may have to UVW Map the object ... look in the max help.

I have its not that, I have it on 2 machines same scene on will not display maps

this is a very simple question ...and can only be one of two things... either you havent pressed show map button, or you havent mapped your object properly.

I really have I am looking at it right now on two different machines. I realise what you are saying that's why I am so confused

Also when you toggle the show map in viewport, the object changes to a lighter tone, it renders fine just will not display

installed max again ? .... wow ... bit drastic ..

I spent about 1 hour nad a half messing about with it, I really have no idea what had happened
