  • Cryptomatte for Photoshop?

Wit the recent 3.6 update I heard of that Cryptomatte plugin for Nuke and Fusion for the first time (since we don't use these packages here). To be honest I don't 100% get what the exact advantage of this plugin is compared to multimattes apart from less data handling (which might be sufficient an advantage to justify buying it). And also is it planned or already available as a photoshop plugin?

Edit: Nevermind, got the advantage from the PDF they provide.

    There are mostly two advantages:

    a) You don't need to set up multimattes in advance by hand. You just add the VRayCryptomatte element and then pull out mattes for whatever you need. This generally simplifies the workflow quite a bit.
    b) You can get very good mattes with just a few additional render elements, instead of having tens (or in some extreme cases, hundreds) of MultiMatte elements. This saves RAM, CPU cycles and disk space.

While there isn't a PhotoShop plugin yet, I'm hoping that one of the many available OpenEXR plugins for PhotoShop will pick this up at some point. If you have contacts with their developers, it might be useful to tell them about it.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I sent the question to the exr-io team. Hope they will implement that feature.
Anybody knows any plugins for AE to use cryptomatte?

The benefits are similar to what you get now with the G-Buffer in psd-manager already. It is a data source to pull mattes from and just like the G-Buffer that psd-manager uses right now it just works with the bucket sampler currently. I'm working on using CryptoMatte as an additional data source for psd-manager.

I'm also cooking new stuff to support CryptoMatte in Adobe apps beyond that. Affinity Photo provides no SDK to develop plugins, it just supports some 64-bit Photoshop plugins - remains to be seen what will work there.
