I have also used my arch viz abilities to confirm design choices like fixtures and tile and etc on remodeling of my house. spring of 2016 I ripped the only bath in mi casa down to the studs and sub floor. Re did it all with new fixtures, tile etc. Giant hassle. Two gotchas attached to every single step. Did all the carpentry, plumbing, electric, tile, drywall patching, texture painting myself. Hired an electrician to run new circuit for heat mat under floor and got an HVAC guy to help move the air duct that was in the space I wanted for the soap recess in the tub surround. 7 weeks of work in a 5 x 8 room. Total cost about 6K. If I did it for someone elase (which I wouldn't) it would have had to have been at least 20K.
Used arch viz for re doing kitchen floor and will be using it for pending kitchen re-model, which will hopefully be the last big remodel I will do. Cabinets, counter tops all 30+ years old and low quality to begin with.
Plus I have gotten good ideas of things I liked from renderings of projects for others. Like the sink in the bath and the dining pendant light I'm about to put in.
Here is rendering and then photo of completed bath. Not exact and not as much care as if done for a client. I used clipping planes in the rendering and ultimately chose a slightly different sink and better floor tile plus other minor differences. It really helped me confirm the tile and fixture choices. Actually was critical to this.

Space has been used recently for personal projects and occasional work projects that need more rendering power.

Did furniture layouts and we previewed all our fixtures, etc before committing. Probably one of my favorite 3d projects.

You have expressed it just right. The key is to be able to enjoy the down time without anxiety. I'm pretty good at it, and getting better at it over time, but there is a limit to how much fortitude I have. you learn about yourself in the process. Living within ones means and having a big emergency fund/ war chest is important.Last edited by OPEN_RANGE; 19-07-2017, 06:23 PM.

Lull in work is not that uncommon for me. But they do make me nervous after some amount of time. I seem to get three jobs at once and go to defcon5 for a month or three and then maybe a few weeks off. Was in steady work flow from Jan thru the beginning of July. I thought I was rolling into two other projects but both went into black hole status. When I get these lulls I work on the house.
yep, single no kids, pets or house plants. Girl friend lives 20 minutes out of town in nice place. I play the piano, striving intermediate, blues, boogie, etc. Was in a band for a bit and did some ok gigs but it fizzled.. I guess all industries face the same thing and that next job needs to come in. Unfortunatly, there is no freelance unemployment.

My house is 1 bedroom 800 sq ft.The part of the house that is shown is @ 300 sq ft and was built in 1894. That was the entire house. Looking beyond toward the kitchen is a 500 sq ft.addition I built in 1985. I'm slowly re-doing everything I did in 1985. Right now I'm in a work lull and I'm poised to cut 8 recess lights and one Pendant light into the ceiling of the Living room shown with the work space. Move everything out and mask off and etc to drill eight 4.25" holes in ceiling with !/2 drywall over 1X wood over coal dust, rock wool and fiberglass bats above.
Plus I'm getting rid of the one upper wall cabinet that is next to the window. The desk was L shaped and extended/turned under that cab. I'm slowly reducing the work space and improving the Living space.
The chair is a Steelcase Leap Chair. I shopped Herman Miller and I like this better plus a lot less expensive. Look at, I think, Madison Seating or something like that for good price.
I'm thinking of monitor upgrade. I have the two Dell 2007 FP shoown. They work fine but seem real old and so.... Any suggestions on what is good for arch viz work?. 800 s.f., I take it that you are not married and you don't have kids. This house is 2500 s.f., which works good for us, which is my wife and two teens.
