Video Cards

Are there any off the shelf solutions? I looked awhile ago, but it didn't seem affordable.

I looked too but I really wanted my open rig to be upright in design (like a PC case) so I had to design it myself. Also, I wanted to keep the mobo and hard drives etc in the original case, so you have to be careful that the cables you use will be long enough (they don't come any longer than 30cm, for my solution anyway.

I've still yet to put it all together, I've been waiting for all the bits to arrive - but the theory is sound and I'm not the first one doing this.

My design took so many iterations to get right - that was quite a tiresome exercise, over 2 weeks......

Apple has enabled the MacBook Pro's to use external GPU's and they are really going to push the whole VR things, so the market may be flooded with all kinds of options this Fall.

an external video card is always a patch for a laptop....reality is, coolness vs. performance and Apple McBook Pro are far to be close to handling heavy 3d stuff as they are right now....I've seen few of them get broken because of overheating only using Rhino without even rendering anything.
